With regard to hair growth and hair loss – these are natural stages of the hair growth cycle.

Everyones hair follows the same specific growth cycle with three distinct and concurrent phases – in this order: anagen, catagen, and telogen phases. These three phases occur simultaneously and while one strand of hair may be in the anagen phase, some other follicles may be in the telogen phase. Each phase has specific characteristics that determine the length of the hair.

Anagen phase

The Anagen phase is a period of steady growth – hair grows approximately 1cm per month and does this continuously for 3–5 years.

Catagen phase

In this phase the growth stops and is followed by a brief transient stage

Telogen phase

The Telogen phase is the 2–4 months resting stage during which old hair is shed from the follicle

Exogen phase

During the Exogen phase, the hair fiber is actively shed, this suggests that the shedding of the hair shaft is an active process

Kenogen phase

The Kenogen phase is the in between phase in which the hair follicle remains empty after the Telogen hair has been expelled and before a new Anagen hair emerges. For more information about Kenogen phase you can refer to this article

I wonder if balding or hair thinning means the follicle is in Kenogen phase. If so then it would be only natural to consider that in the right conditions – the hair follicle would then return to the Anagen phase and repeat the cycle.
